Verona

An undisputed symbol of the Scaliger dynasty and one of the main attractions in Verona, Castelvecchio stands majestically in the heart of the city, reminding everyone, with its imposing presence and nobility, who the masters of the city were.

Built between 1354 and 1356, Castelvecchio is the most important military monument of the Della Scala lordship, a dynasty that ruled over Verona for one hundred twenty-five years, from 1262 to 1387.
The castle was originally named San Martino in Aquaro, a name possibly linked to its proximity to the Adigetto and a bridge that spanned the canal or the Adige, and it took on the current name of Castelvecchio only after the construction of the castles San Felice and San Pietro.
Today, Castelvecchio is the most important museum in the city, displaying significant collections of medieval, Renaissance, and modern art (up to the XVIII century), with twenty-nine rooms housing precious collections of Italian and foreign paintings, sculpture, archaeological finds, ancient weapons, miniatures, ceramics, goldsmith's works, and the ancient city bells.

The complex is divided into the Court of the Royal Palace, the Arms Court, the Keep, and the Bridge.

The building underwent significant restoration at the end of the 1950s, closely collaborating with the then-director Licisco Magagnato and architect Carlo Scarpa, becoming one of the most complete and well-preserved interventions, designed to embody the idea of a museum as a total work of art. Scarpa, with his innovative approach, created a museum path that harmoniously integrates the exhibited works with the historical architecture of the castle.

The Museum also boasts the prestigious Carlo Scarpa Archive, which recently launched its new website: the portal now allows for consultation of high-resolution graphic material, with the option to freely download a selection of drawings.
