Lunetta Savino is the protagonist of the epic theatrical play by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht “Mother Courage and Her Children”. Thanks to the brilliant reinterpretation by director Leo Muscato, the work is brought back to its most authentic, popular, and emotional nature, not to impart a lesson, but to show the audience the harsh and complex reality of the present.
Courage is not a heroic protagonist; she is a contradictory figure who treats conflict as a marketplace, willing even to change sides in order to gain in times of crisis. She is brusque, elusive, and always on alert, but would do anything to protect her beloved children from the horrors of war, and it is precisely this dichotomy between the cynical merchant and the protective mother that makes her human.
According to Brecht, the accompanying music played a central role and was to be both harsh and sentimental at the same time. Muscato reinterprets it in a less military and more rock style, not only to support the scene but also to interrupt and illuminate it. He transforms it into a concert of lights, sounds, and bodies that demonstrates a fierce journey through the devastated Europe of the seventeenth century and our present.
