Palazzo Vescovile

Historic monument

Soave-East Veronese

Next to the town hall stands the bishop's palace, built in the second half of the 15th century by Bishop Ermolao Barbaro, based on the project and direction of engineer Michele da Caravaggio along with his son Francesco, on the site of a previous Gothic building.

Imposing and massive in appearance, it develops around a rectangular Renaissance cloister, with 22 columns of red Verona marble with large leaf capitals at the corners on the ground floor, and an equal number in the upper loggia, with a well in the center.

In September 1581, the palace hosted Empress Maria of Austria for one night while traveling, along with her brother Maximilian, from Bohemia to Spain. From 1801 to 1805, when the right bank of the Adige was in French hands, Bishop Giovanni Andrea Avogadro stayed there.

Since 1955, it has been municipal property.

In the chapel, one can admire the Nativity of Mary, a fresco from 1534 by Francesco Torbido.
