Verona

Walking through the districts of the ancient city, one encounters one of the most historically and architecturally rich streets of Verona: Via Pigna, which still follows the ancient Roman layout today.

According to the division of the city during the Roman era, Via Pigna was part of the second decumanus of the left side of the Decumanus Maximus, one of the two main arteries (along with the Cardo Maximus) that divided Verona into four parts.

The name of the street originates from the stone sculpture in the shape of a pine cone located on a column trunk at the corner with Via Verità.
It most likely was part of the decoration of a Roman funerary monument, as the pine cone has been a symbol of continuity after death since ancient times.

This evocative street certainly deserves to be rediscovered and admired in order to notice the numerous palaces of considerable historical and artistic importance that overlook it.
