Chiesa di San Valentino

Church

Soave-East Veronese

This is a 14th-century church that perhaps existed as early as 1300 in the form of a small chapel, called Pilastro, as learned from an inscription inside the Church itself, placed above the lunette in the entrance wall. It reads “TEMPLUM HOC EXTRUCTUM FUIT X MAJ MCCC EXORNTUM X MAJ M.C.M. III,” which means: “It was built on May 10th, 1300, and adorned on May 10th, 1903.” The last date refers to the restorations that took place in the 6th centenary, which gave it its current state.

In 1429, the Church dedicated to San Valentino was built by the faithful. At that time, there was a modest convent next to the Church, built by the Carmelites in the 15th century, suppressed in 1656 for unknown reasons.

The chapel has a single nave, with simple shapes, featuring a trussed roof; the barrel vaults of the apse date back to the 12th century. Inside, there is a stone statue by A. Rigetti representing San Valentino the priest, and another, much compromised, depicting San Valentino the Bishop. On the outside, it is flanked by a characteristic bell tower.
