The Castelrotto Theatre Company returns to Sommacampagna with a hilarious show inspired by the 1978 Italian Basaglia Law, which marked a historic turning point in Italian psychiatry by closing psychiatric hospitals and promoting a more humane approach that respects the dignity of people with mental health issues. Recently, despite nearly half a century having passed since the law was enacted, the debate surrounding it has resurfaced. Some argue that the law needs to be updated, while others fear a return to more restrictive and segregating models of care.
This is the underlying theme of a show that is, in reality, a whirlwind of comic situations somewhere between farce and realism, featuring a succession of characters who at times evoke the spirit of commedia dell’arte, the traditional Italian form of improvised comedy.
